Trip to the Eye Doctor

Thursday I took Gracie to see Doctor Enders at the Mount Laurel Animal Hospital. Of course, I had to give Gracie her anxiety meds before and I felt awful seeing her so lethargic, so I’m so glad that I don’t have to do this to her very often.

As for our visit, we called in and were quickly called into the office. The Ophthalmology staff was great. They took us right into an exam room and then took Gracie to get her eyes tested. The results of the test gave us good news a bad. The good news is that Gracie’s good eye is completely healthy. The bad news is her bad eye is really bad. Dr. Enders did a great job explaining the issue. Basically, she has irreversible glaucoma. Using a white board Dr. Enders showed me how the lens has slipped forward, preventing the fluid the eye makes from draining. As a result, pressure builds in the eye. In Gracie’s case the pressure in her eye reads off the scale. As a result, it’s like she is living with a chronic migraine. As someone who gets migraines, I know how horrible this is.

The best course of action moving ahead is to have her bad eye removed. So Wednesday, Gracie will be having surgery. The good news is, according to Dr. Enders, a pretty simple surgery (which in some ways show how far all medicine has come!). Gracie will only be under for about 20 minutes. The best part is that the surgery is out patient surgery so I will be able to pick up that evening. She will have to wear a cone for 2 weeks, but the stitches are dissolvable, so all we will need is a follow up exam to ensure she’s healing well.

I’ll post more updates on the day of the surgery.
